Community Resources Connection, Inc. and The Beech grove Baptist Church partnered to hold a Food Distribution and Back to School giveaway. It was one of two Community distribution events held by the group this summer.
President Shawn Robins and Secretary Damien Antoine worked diligently with Rev Dr. Gregory White to support their food security program within the local community.
Thanks to individual donations, Associated Grocers (AG), Shoppers Value and Walmart, the events were success in providing several days of meals and school supplies for many of the families within the Beech Grove Church community.
A huge thank you to the many volunteers that worked so hard to ensure that the events were successful by collecting the donations, preparing distribution bags and participating in distribution day activities.
As an addition part to Beech grove Baptist Church‘s commitment to servicing its community, they have established a community garden through a joint effort between the United States Department of Agriculture(USDA), Natural Resources Conservation Service(NRCS) and Community Resources Connection(CRC), Inc.
Having the community garden can be a great addition to their neighborhood. Beech grove Baptist Church would like to invite the community to share in such benefits as:
- Provides a sense of community
- Gives neighbors a safe space to gather and work in a peaceful place
- Provides the community access to fresh fruits and vegetables
- Those who choose to plant feel personally invested in where they live, gaining a sense of ownership and community engagement
- Helps to relieve stress and increases wellness through movement and exercise. Gardening creates the opportunity to slow down and experience nature.
- Gardening teaches responsibility and patience. Teaching children the art of gardening can help them to develop both gross and fine motor skills.
- Allows children access to fresh foods. They may think “they don’t like something,” but maybe they’ve just never tried it!
- There is nothing like the feeling of accomplishment when that first vegetable is ready to be picked.
- Nutrition is an important element of physical and mental health.
- Relationships and friendships can blossom in amongst the rows of peas or carrots.
- Food deserts are apparent in the Baton Rouge/Baker area. A community garden helps subsidize the lack of access to fresh and nutritious foods in urban areas.
- Whether you’re an experienced gardener or have never touched soil, there is a role for everyone to play in a community garden.
