Shreveport Green Urban Farm acts as a platform to build equity through garden & nutrition education, environmental sustainability workshops, and community engagement in Caddo Parish, Louisiana. Our program recognizes that degenerative diseases are influenced by social determinants of health, including food security. Our farm is in Ledbetter Heights, the area of our city with the lowest median income, and the least amount of access to fresh produce. With the support of federal and private funders and dedicated volunteers, we proudly supply the neighborhood with fruits and vegetables at no cost. The USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service funding has allowed the garden to create an American Disability Act (ADA) section so that the elderly and disabled can have access to participate in gardening activities. We place emphasis on nutrition & culinary education by incorporating recipe booklets and cooking demonstrations at every produce distribution. Our primary goal is to provide a bi-monthly disbursement of fruits & vegetables to those living in HUD’s Bayou Grande apartments. All excess produce is distributed through our Mobile Market program to other low-access neighborhoods across the city. Our mobile market reaches over 1,200 people annually. Beyond healthy eating, our farm fosters a place of healing by providing an accessible greenspace that inspires a deeper connection with the natural environment. We offer free workshops that educate groups on the importance of biodiversity and how those same principles align with individual and societal structures. Our farm is acts as a place of nourishment for the mind, body, and soul! The Shreveport Urban Farm was recently listed as a USDA People Garden!!
